Drive By Pallet Scanning

Revolutionizing inbound and outbound pallet scanning

Warehouses of all sizes are looking for ways to improve their pallet processing. The process of identifying, scanning, and validating incoming and outgoing pallets is time-consuming and labor-intensive, often leading to bottlenecks and congestion in receiving areas. To address these issues, Vimaan has developed PalletSCAN 100-D, a solution that enables drive-by pallet scanning in warehouse staging areas and dock doors.

With drive-by pallet scanning, forklift drivers and autonomous vehicles unloading pallets from trucks can pass by the PalletSCAN 100-D, triggering automatic scans and validation of the pallet contents. This eliminates the need for manual cycle counting and significantly reduces the time and labor required for pallet processing.

What is drive by pallet scanning?

Inventory tracking methods, such as manual counting and barcode scanning, are time-consuming, prone to human error, and disruptive to workflows. Here’s why drive-by pallet scanning is a must-have solution for modern warehouses:

  1. Enhanced Inventory Accuracy – Maintaining accurate inventory records is critical for order fulfillment and warehouse efficiency. Traditional inventory checks often result in discrepancies due to manual errors, misplaced items, or miscounts. Drive-by pallet scanning leverages computer vision and AI-powered analysis to ensure that every pallet is accounted for with pinpoint accuracy.
  2. Reduction in Labor Costs – Manual cycle counting and inventory audits require a significant workforce, leading to high labor costs. By automating the scanning process, warehouses can reallocate labor resources to more value-added tasks while significantly reducing operational expenses. This is especially beneficial for large distribution centers managing thousands of pallets.
  3. Increased Operational Efficiency – Drive-by pallet scanning allows warehouses to conduct inventory tracking in real-time without requiring operations to halt. Forklifts or autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) can drive directly from the truck to the shelves without stopping.   This continuous data capture provided by PalletSCAN 100-D ensures faster data collection and discrepancy identification.
  4. Minimized Disruptions to Warehouse Operations – Unlike traditional pallet scan methods using handheld scanners, drive-by pallet scanning seamlessly integrates into daily workflows. This means that warehouses can maintain peak productivity while ensuring accurate inventory tracking.
  5. Seamless Integration with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) – PalletSCAN 100-D integrates directly with leading Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and other logistics software. This connectivity ensures that drive-by pallet scanning data is automatically recorded and validated, reducing administrative workload.
  6. Scalability for Large Warehouses – For warehouses managing high volumes of SKUs and palletized goods, scaling inventory audits with traditional methods is challenging. Drive-by pallet scanning enables warehouses to scale effortlessly, as the system can accommodate growing inventory needs without requiring additional human resources. Stored Inventory: These labels help track the location and status of inventory within the warehouse. As part of the inventory cycle counting functions, scanning these labels allows for better inventory tracking and management.
Drive by pallet scanning
Scanning pallets moving up to 10mph in the warehouse.

Drive-by pallet scanning with PalletSCAN 100-D consists of high-speed cameras, embedded LED lighting, sensors and Vimaan’s proprietary machine learning and computer vision algorithms. These systems scan pallets moving up to 10mph and can be easily added to warehouse dock doors, allowing for instant data collection as MHE drive by.  Alternatively, some warehouses elect to have designated standalone scanning stations which capture pallet data as the MHE proceeds to the aisles.  Typical applications PalletSCAN 100-D is used for:

  • Case counting
  • Damage Detection
  • Pallet Tracking and Counting
  • Automated System Receiving and Shipping Validation

These easy-to-use scanning systems are replacing the need for bulky warehouse barcode reading tunnels.  Combining two PalletSCAN 100-D systems allows warehouses to capture both left and right sides of the pallet.  This combination of drive-by pallet scanners can be configured on each side of dock doors or in designated warehouse scanning areas.  Regardless of where the scanners are placed, drivers do not need to stop for scanning and can proceed directly to their designated storage areas.

Drive-by pallet scanning is revolutionizing warehouse operations by enabling immediate data capture, instant content validation, improved accuracy and automated inventory. PalletSCAN 100-D is engineered to address key pain points in traditional warehouse management, including labor-intensive data capture and documentation, operational disruptions, and inventory inaccuracies. By implementing PalletSCAN 100-D drive-by scanning solutions, warehouses optimize efficiencies, reduce costs, and maintain seamless inventory control with minimal manual intervention.

As warehouses continue to prioritize automation and real-time visibility, drive-by pallet scanning will play an essential role in shaping the future of inventory management. Investing in this technology today ensures that businesses stay competitive and prepared for the evolving demands of modern supply chain operations.
